Its been hard fishing this second half of the season, lack of winds – well except for easterly’s, the abnormal long summer with temperatures well into the 30s till late October. And when the weather did change, it went to the extremes with horrendous storms and a lot of rain, however we have had some good fish with several lads still getting new PB,s.

The biggest Carp banked over the last few weeks took the scales round to 59 lb 12oz, we’ve had several 40s, plenty of 30s and even Comizo Barbel to over 30lb.

Thewater temperature actually dropped over 5 degrees the last week when Mal andDom were here. It’s now down to 15 degs, so when Dutch Biker Martien arrivedthings were slow and it carried on like that. Again mainly easterly winds withthe odd rain storm, but we kept at it scaling down to try and get runs off themany fish topping in the area. I managed a Carp of around 28lb and Martien oneat 31lb early on, then one of my baited areas produced a nice surprise for me,a new PB Barbel at 24lb. Soon after another bigger fish, lost to an underwatercrayfish pot and then another PB at 26.5lb. Not the Carp I was after but acouple of good Barbel.

Westruggled on praying for one of the lumps crashing in the area to take one ofour baits, but it wasn’t to happen. Martien lost a couple of fish on longdistance rods but managed to land the 3^rd run from the feature, anew PB at over 41lb. Continuing with the small hook and bait approach he alsolanded a 37lb Common and I finished it off with yet another Barbel at just over20 lb.

Gaz and the lads were also up a couple of weeksago, they had fished the Orellana with us several years ago and had a fair fewfish to around 30lb. Over the last few years they have hit the Ebro, and didwell, once they had 5 x 40s in a weeks session. This time they took on theOrellana alone but to no avail, after a few days with no runs they moved towaters they knew. Hope they come back next year, would like to do a socialsession with you all…

OCTOBER

Domand Mal returned, this time both wanted to stick it out for big fish. Last tripDom had a PB Mirror at over 43 lb and a Common around 40, but it wasn’t tohappen this trip!! They managed 3 days fishing out of the week due to veryheavy rains, storms and high winds, what a nightmare, good on the ´office boys´for sticking it out.

Thekiss of death was probably Mal asking ´when was the last time you had a groupblank?´ ´The only fish was to my rodswith this 41.5lb Common, hope you get better luck next visit boys.

Davewas back again bringing a great present with him. Most of our prepared meals dohave vegetables in them; however he thought we could do with a steaming kit.It’s now so much easier to prepare a meat n veg dinner, just like this Lambdish.

Thisdish was prepared inside a bivvy whilst a storm was brewing outside, however wemanaged to get the meal over before the full strength of the storm hit us. Daveslept on a chair in my bivvy as the storm hit us, why he thought mine was saferthan his I don’t know. It was crazy with wind gusting to over 80km/hr, a coupleof times we ran round all the pegs to make sure they hadn’t vibrated loose – wesurvived it.

Enoughof that for now, about the fishing - Davesuggested a little bet (he was alone I was going to fishing with him), probablybecause he did so well last year as he had plenty of fish to 46lb on his firstCarp fishing session.

Hesuggested a 2 way bet between us, biggest fish and total weight. Loser of thebet would pay for the final night T bone steak and the other pay for the nightsbeers. He got off to a cracking start – at one stage he had around a 85lb - Olead. Heres some of his fish, at one stage he had 4 fish for over 110lb, onebeing a Barbel at 30lb 8oz, nice surprise.

Itdidn’t last for long; I caught steadily with most fish over 30 lb to take bothbiggest fish and most weight with these fish. The fishing was hard, however wehad plenty of laughs and good food. The question is will Dave suggest a betnext year? We will see, looking forward to his next visit, it was a greatsteak, even better being bought for me lol

Stucame up for a 3 day session, again bad fishing conditions, easterly winds andhot. Whats going on with the weather, when’s it going to give us a break????The session was hard, I couldn’t get arun whilst Stu´s only run was from this 15.5lb Comizo Barbel, the first Comizoout of Orellana I have never seen in 7yrs, so what a surprise, especially for 5pm in hot sunny conditions. What another hard week, easterly breeze, full moon and hot everyday with temperatures around 34 deg every day. Nevertheless the Dutch lads did ok considering.

Erwin banking a new PB again, last year he had one at 46.5lb andthis year he upped it a little to 48lb and a lovely looking fish too. Erik had4 fish all 30´s, biggest weighing in at 38.5lb a couple of pounds below his PB,well done Pretty boy. It was, as alwaysgreat to see the lads and enjoy a few beers with them, they like to enjoy theirtime here, catching fish is a bonus. See you next year lads.

After the lads left, Craig managed to get an evening fishing with mate Chino.

Chino was with his missus and little Carlos (18 months) so he thought he would join them for a couple of beers and chuck out the rods. Chino found the smaller fish were moving and even starting to feed a little, he had 6 runs with fish to 28lb, Craig baited up with Vital Baits boilies and had one run, this 32lb 8oz common, Not bad as it was a finca they haven’t fished for a couple of years and no prebaiting.

Let’s hope the weather changes soon, regular Stu is coming up for a social but fresh easterly winds are forecast for the week.

SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Wehave had a high pressure drifting over us for weeks now, no wind, hot – up to38 degrees and no rain for months. The water needs oxygenating, but we arestruggling on.

Atthe moment we have out a couple of pleasure anglers, they’re getting the odd fish-small Carp, Barbel and Crucian Carp. Mikes had several Carp to around 12lb -great fun on light tackle - whilst ´uglybloke Ian´ has had up to 18 fish a day consisting of Crucians averaging over3lb and carp to double figures.

Isay ´ugly bloke Ian´ as he was called this by a little English boy whilstenjoying a beer in a bar. Ian said ´Fancy travelling all the way here to b ecalled ´ugly´ by an English Kid - anugly English kid at that´

Nextweek sees the return of the 3 regular daft Dutch lads and back to Carp fishing,let’s hope theres a change in the weather, not that it’s forecasted anotherweek of the dreaded easterly winds… Either way we are looking forward to seeingthem again.

Arthur(A young 72) visits us once a year with friend Tony (68) and fish an area ofthe lake where there’s lots of smaller fish around the 25lb mark. Due to theconditions they struggled and only had 9 runs in 5 days, however every now andthen the area produces a bigger fish, and it was Arthur who got lucky with thisPB 40lb Orellana Common. Well done mate.

As it was slow due to the abnormallyhot weather, they joined Craig in an area for bigger fish.

Itwas also hard work; however Craig managed the only 2 runs in the 3 days, onebeing the 59lb12oz Common that nearly dragged poor Arthur into the lake when itwas in the landing net. We are not into naming fish, but this one was nicknamed- Tyson.

It never stopped fighting, even in the cradle, an animal. Not the best oflooking fish at 59 lb 12 oz, but Craigs Orellana PB.

He has the luck this year, in 9 days fishing Feb and March he had 48lb, 46lb 4 oz, 44lb, 41lb 12oz, 40lb

Craigwas asked to do a presentation on Carp fishing at a Fair in the area. PedroLuengo, president of local Carp fishing Club Talacarp had asked us the lastcouple of years, but we never managed to get there due to being busy. Arthurand Tony wandered around as Craig showed anglers end tackle and explained aboutcounter balanced baits and pop-ups.

Were back on the bank and into the new season after the summer break

Our first group of the season sees the return of John, Cliff and Mark - and what a hard week it was…..Temperatures in the upper thirties, little wind - the fish just didn’t want to feed, but they certainly showed themselves.

We literally had hundreds of fish topping in the area everyday, and some were very big lumps. Cliff had 8 fish in total, 5 within sixhours on the same rod. Then after a move to the mouth of the bay a couple ofdays later he had other 3 within two hours, again all on the same rod. In totalhe had 4 x 30lb plus fish, biggest a 37lb common, nothing like his 52lb Commonlast year, but he did have his first Orellana Mirror at 31lb.

So frustrating for Mark and John, seeing so many fish crashing over the baits but with only 1 run each, Johns on the first morning, and Marks on the last night. Well done to the lads for sticking it out.

Craig had a social session early September,just really checking out to see if the fish were showing and the features asthe water level has dropped so much. They had several runs between them, mainlyupper twenties with Craig and Philipe landing the largest fish of the sessionwith these at 35lb and a 36.5lb for Philipe.

It’s been a busy summer for us and we didn’tget time to update our blog, so heres a brief look at what some of our guestscaught earlier on in the year.

Lee, Tom and Tony ventured over, the second trip for Lee. He turned up late as he went directly from Seville to Madrid to watch his team get thrashed by Madrid. The bad luck wasnt to change. The lads had this Common within the hour of casting out, however the Carp went into spawning mode and even with moving to the lower end of the lake, the fish just wouldnt feed. Probably one of the worst weeks we had.

Colin with his irst Barbel ever. He had plenty of action on the tip and float, bagging up with Carp and Barbel.

Dom andMalcolm travelled together but each had different targets. Mal was after runsand Dom was just after the bigger fish. To begin with, things were hard with aneasterly wind, however things got better as the wind changed. Dom managed toland a PB Mirror at 43.5lb and a PB Common just under the 40 lb mark. Mal on theother hand was so chuffed with so many runs from fish well into the 20s, heactually wound in his rods at lunchtime one day, he had around 15 runs thatmorning.

Fly angler Andreas wanted a go at carp fishingso he visited us for 3 days. With a PB Carp of 8lb under his belt it wasn’thard to beat. He took to it like a duck to water and hammered his PB severaltimes with several 20lb plus fish and this 34lb Common.

It’s been quite a difficult time for us lately, the weather had hounded us again, this time its easterly winds. Sven and Antonio from Germany managed a few runs before the wind changed and came from the east, they will be back later on in the year to do a follow up article in one of the big magazines they write for.

Ian and the lads have been back again, enjoying the fishing and drinking sessions on an evening. They fished waggler and tip tactics for the Spanish equivalent of Crucians, Carp and Barbel. Novice angler Kev´the tangle´ kept us busy setting him up and amused with his antics. Waddling out to his thighs in wellies is not a good idea, next time we will bring you have waders mate. Ian kicked ass most days even though he started off using a feeder suitable for fishing at distance on the tidal Trent. Kev had his biggest catch ever and Steve left the bandana at home this year and managed to get an all round tan this time, rather than a face like a can of Budweiser last time. Great to see you again boys, see you next year…

Crazy February

Into February and what a funny old month we have had, the weather has been so changeable, and so was the fishing.

Peter and Charith from Holland were over early on in the month, temperatures were reaching into the 20´s every day, bright sunshine and not a hint of a breeze. Adding to that there was a very heavy frost every night and the pressures were sky high. The lads stuck at it despite the bad conditions, we moved them several times to try to get fish, even resorting to Brava for a couple of days. They managed 6 runs in total, nothing big, being experienced anglers, with PB´s of over 60lb, they knew the conditions were against us and appreciated the effort we made. They’re back later on in the year, so lets hope conditions are more favorable for their next visit.

Within a few days of their departure the weather changed, and so did the fishing. Craig and Lee were to have their first session of the year on Orellana. With a strong westerly and rain they were almost straight into the fish, landing several 20lb fish with a couple of lower 30´s. Regular visitor Stu was to join them for a couple of days. Craig left to collect him, and on returning, Lee was just about to land a decent fish, a helping hand soon had the 42lb 10 oz common sliding into the net. A few hours later, the big fella had done it again, this time a little over the 40lb mark.

The wind got stronger and stronger and at one stage, as they were fishing at distance, they couldn’t get the baits out. Stu and Craig managed to get a rod a piece out as the wind dropped for a few minutes. Other rods were placed in the margin, but to no avail. They didn’t have long before the action started, literally 2 hours later Craig’s distant rod screamed off, and the result was a 37.5lb common. A couple of hours later Stu was in, again at distance, and another common at 35.5lb.

The wind did eventually die down enough for baits to be presented right, even a bit of break from the rain to manage a B-B-Q. Craig had the luck, for once, and couldn’t go wrong; he has a knack for catching a phenomenal amount of upper 30lb fish. His sights have been set on a 20kg+ (44lb) fish, and he managed just that, not once, but twice..

In total Craig had fish at
46lb 4 oz, 44lb and 41lb 12oz. 5 x 30´s, 6 x 20´s and 1double

Lee managed
42lb 12oz, 40lb 4oz, 4x 30´s, 3x 20´s and 1 double.

Stu landed 2 fish at 35lb and 35lb 4oz

All fish were taken on VITAL BAITS

Ken was back, and what was he to bring along with him this time? Torrential rains??? Thunder and lightning??? NO, it was his friend Bob and a very strong easterly. This bloke has so much bad luck with the weather…… On his last trip he had a PB Mirror at 36lb and was quite aware of the potential of this lake. Neitherless to say due to the easterly, the going was very hard, but he did manage to land a new PB Common at 34lb.

The monotonous was interrupted by the arrival of Spanish National TV who had rang Craig as they wanted to film us whilst fishing with clients. A laugh was had by all as Ken and Craig were interviewed, but ´pensioner Bob ‘was only allowed to be filmed talking to his mate and setting up the unhooking mats. I bet his bottom lip is still wobbling now, to top it off the producer had asked him if he was a pensioner. He is 6 years younger than Ken who celebrated not only his 64 th birthday but his 40^th wedding anniversary whilst over here.

Over the last two years Northern Europe has had to contend with horrendous winters, whilst here in Extremadura we have enjoyed some cracking winter fishing. We hear many anglers complaining that the lakes are frozen, some in Holland and Denmark for months, and temperatures well below freezing.

Obviously we can’t guarantee sunny days with temperatures of nearly 20 degrees or run after run, but we do get lots of days like this throughout December and January.

JANUARY UPDATE

EFS guides, Lee and Craig have managed to get in a couple of short sessions in on Sierra Brava already this year.

During January they have fished a total of 9 days over the three sessions and had a staggering 68 runs with fish well into the 30´s. That’s not bad for winter fishing, sometiimes having to deal with easterly winds and cold nights.

Winter Fishing on the Orellana with Vital Bait

Here´s photos of some of the fish as reported in our previous post. During December Lee and Stu managed a 72 hr session on the Orellana, between them they banked over 30 fish, most were 30lb plus. Lee had fish to 42lb and Stu took a new PB of 39.5lb.. all taken on VITAL BAIT fishmeal boilies.

Extrema Fishing Spain would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

Well yet another year over, 2010 has come to a close and what a second half of the season it’s been. We have had a very busy season with plenty of fish and great laughs with our guests.

We have seen dozens of upper 30 – 50lb+ previously uncaught fish being banked by our guests, and a fair few lost, only 9 out of the many clients failing to bank a new PB.

Our guides, when they have managed to get the time to wet a line, have banked some cracking fish. Lee had 2 new Orellana PB´s, a 59.5lb Common and a 44lb Mirror, within 6 days of fishing and Craig has caught more upper 30lb fish than the amount of days he has actually fished. So come and see what it’s all about, be quick though, we´re getting booked up, many regulars have already rebooked and plenty of new guests are wanting to take on these hard fighting wild Carp….

DECEMBER UPDATE

We haven’t managed much time fishing during December; we have been visiting friends and family all over the place. However on the two short sessions that we did manage to get on the bank we had some cracking fish. Whilst Craig was braving the cold in UK, Lee and Stu did a 72 hr session and banked over 30 fish, several were upper 30´s and Stu banked a new PB of 39.5lb, Lee had fish to 42lb.

The next venture out was Craig and Lee on a short 48 hr session a week or so before Xmas. Between them they had 5 runs with fish again between 25 and 35 lb, not bad for winter fishing, heres a couple of the fish.

In the meanwhile we are going to put in a few more sessions, so keep an eye on our updates and see how we get on.

Novice Carp Anglers on the Orellana

Christian and John took on the Orellana and won, over the 3 days the novice anglers had plenty of fish. They landed several 30´s between them, Johns took the biggest fish at 44lb, he is a sample of their catches. More photos of the 30´s still to come.

Pleasure Fishing

Dave, owner of North West Angling Center, visited for a 4 day break. Due to illness he only managed 2 days fishing, he banked around 15 Barbel, several carp including this 14.5lb new PB , all on tip tactics
. Beer monster Chris and friends only fished days. He they are all with new PB - well all except Chris, unfortunately as the saying goes, the big one gotta way. A great laugh was had by all, I´m just hope Chris and George dont returnat the same time, couldnt handle them both at once. Look forward to seeing you next year,

For Ian´s second visit this year, he decided to go for Specimen Carp rather than course fishing. They only fished the days, enjoying the local cuisine and night life in the village on the evenings. Unfortunatley Mick pulled out of mid to upper 30lb Mirror at the net after a right tussle, however they both still managed a new PB each.

The Flying Dutchmen return to Orellana

As expected the next week was full of laughs and banter. Derek, Erwin and Erik from Rotterdam like to enjoy themselves whilst here. The thing that fueled the situation was that the two lads fishing the opposite side of the bay with Lee were from Amsterdam, at one stage football songs were being chanted from both sides. Arno thought it was a good idea to join the Rotterdam boys for a few beers one afternoon; it wasn’t, especially drinking with Erwin. When he left, he was a right mess he could hardly walk, let alone steer the boat, Beer monster Erwin carried on drinking into the evening.

The fishing was a little slow, possible due to all the noise, however the lads had a few fish, they like to enjoy their holiday, a break from work with some fishing. Heres a couple of fish they caught, Erwin with his new PB 45.5lb Orellana uncaught Wild Common.

Orellana Carp Fishing

Another Dutch visitor was Biker Martien: As the big fella was traveling alone, Craig managed to sneak in a couple of days fishing with him. Martien was set in his ways and Craig couldn’t convince him to change the ´helicopter rig´ however he managed to get him to use our suggested hook bait – well after a couple of runs that is. All rods were changed and the fish started to come. He landed around a dozen ´small´ fish to 29lb and a mid 30 when the dreaded easterly wind arrived, the temperature dropped and the runs stopped, Craig in the meanwhile had a couple of fish to just below 39lb.

Boy can this bloke drink, there was a lot of banter going on between us and, at one stage a raiding party (Rob, Craig’s nephew who was over helping out, and Martien) boated across to Lee´s group in search of beer. Well as you can see they couldn’t have got much beer in the boat with the big lad so they had a few drinks with them on the otherside of the bay …

Luckily the fish started to feed again before he had to leave, another 7 runs between them and a new PB of just below 39lb for Martien on his final morning.

Orellana Carp Fishing

Robert, Craigs nephew, has been helping us out over the last few weeks and he managed to get some time on the rods when Dave went off for a shower. A couple of years ago on his last visit, he had a 34lb PB Mirror and he’s been at it again. Another new PB Mirror of 36.6lb, and what a beauty….

As you can see most Orellana fish are fin perfect, they are wild fish and we have never seen the same fish caught twice.. Craig on the other hand has landed this 38lb 14oz Common that has to be one of the ugliest fish we have seen. Well its quite pretty next to Craig…

Novice Carp angler Dave decided to dive in at the deep end and take on the Orellana.

With only 18 months fishing experience and a PB of 16lb, he beat his PB several times. In total he had fish of 18lb, seven 20s, most around 26 – 28lb, a 34, 36, 37.5 and a cracking 45lb 14oz Common

George joined us for a couple of nights, keeping us well entertained with his antics. On his previous overnight visit he took his PB to 28lb, this time he joined us for 3 days and had three 30lb plus fish out. The fishing went a little quiet for a couple of days due to a brisk easterly wind, however George kept us from getting bored. Mauld wine was brewed, steaks cooked Flambé style, you can imagine what happened when far too much Vodka was poured on… When Dave returned from the shower run he found he had a lovely garden around his bivvy – and Dave wants George to join him next year, can’t wait….

We are really busy at the moment, we will get all our updates on as soon as possible, still more catch reports to come.

Jean from Holland gave us a call on the off chance he could get to fish the Orellana. He was on his way back from a trip to Morocco that was cut short due to problems.

After what seemed a long wait over the weekend, due to not being able to obtain licences, we were soon on the bank Monday lunch time.

As Jean was on his own so Craig managed to fish with him for part of the duration. After a couple of days in one area, they decided to move into the peg being vacated by another group of guests.

The new peg had produced many fish including many 30,s, a couple of 40´s and a fifty only days before. So leaving the first area with a 31lb and a couple of upper 20´s under Jean´s belt, one a Mirror, they settled into the new swim. Craig had already taken a 36lb Common from the first swim and was confident that between them they would land something bigger even though the full moon was lighting up the area like a search light. . It wasn’t to happen; they had around 7 runs each per day, mostly with the hard fighting 20lb plus commons. Several times Jean would say, íts a big fish´ as the wild fish would scream off time and time again. These fish are wild, most have never seen a hook before and do not give up - even when in the net.

Between them they lost several fish, pulling out of some and loosing others into snags. Craig managed a slightly bigger stamp of fish, several just below the 30lb mark whilst Jean had fish mostly around 20-25lb.

We’ve since had a few days away from the bank now, preparing for the next groups that arrive this weekend, time to catch our breaths and organize the office, Great!!!

Next up more Dutch anglers, 1 new group and the return of the 3 flying Dutchmen, looking forward to this…

Next up was the return of Ken. This was Kens second visit this year, unfortunately his first was in March when we had the horrendous weather conditions and the Orellana rose 1 meter in 6 hours.

This time he didn’t bring too much rain with him and managed to get into the Wild hard fighting Orellana Carp. He again, like the others, lost several fish in the process but still managed to land a new PB, this 36lb Mirror

Our new season has started; the first group have been and gone. It was a cracking week as the lads worked hard and got into the fish. Between them they managed to land, and loose, some cracking Orellana lumps and all but 1 of the lads getting new PB´s on the Orellana.

Cliff experienced what the Orellana is about, he hooked into one fish that ran and didn’t stop, he eventually lost it after it took emptied half the line off his LC reels. As the week went on he returned many twenty pound plus fish, naming each one as he did, (something I can’t publish on here) He banked many fish to 34lb throughout the week, however on his final morning all the hard work paid off and he banked a stunning 51lb wild Common PB. Good angling Cliff.

Sumo has landed 2 or 3 40lb plus fish in France, however he still managed a PB, this long wild 42lb Common. Again good angling, after working through every possible rig imaginable - (and unimaginable)........

Mark was first to beat his PB with a 20lb Common, he upped it throughout the week several times ending up with a mid 20.

John was so unlucky not to take a new PB in amongst all the runs he had, however he did land around 4 fish about a pound below his current PB of 36lb.

Chino got the fishing bug after last week’s social on the Orellana. He wanted to make the most of his week off and dragged Craig out in the scorching heat for a couple of 24 hr sessions. It was hard going during the day with temperatures in the 40´s but the fish were active. Between them they had nearly 30 runs, most being mid to upper 20´s and five 30lb plus fish.

The night time temperatures are starting to drop, soon well have better fishing weather for our guests that start arriving soon.

Craig and Chino managed to get in a short session on the Orellana, first time for over 2 months. The temperature has been hovering around 40 deg for July and August; however a couple of days of thunderstorms gave them the opportunity to get in a short session. They managed to catch the last day of the cooler weather, around 30 deg, and had 15 runs between them. Nothing huge with the fish averaging around 20lb, but great to get a bend in the rods.

Chinos landed the biggest fish of the 20 hour session, this 33lb Common.

It’s usually time for us to chill out during the hot summer months; however this isn’t going to happen this year.

Extrema Fishing and the local Council are working together on a couple of projects.

Firstly we are setting up a ´Fishing School´ where we offer tuition in various types and levels of fishing. Early morning sessions are underway for local children from the ‘Casa de la Cultura’ summer school.

Extrema Fishing Spain and the local Ayuntamiento de Puebla de Alcocer would like to thank the ´European Fishing Tackle Trade Association´ and their members for their kind donations. www.eftta.com

We received many donations of fishing equipment from the Valencia Exhibition in June, all will be put to good use and help us considerably in setting up the ´School´

Also the Local Council has employed Craig to operate a boat for the summer months. Not only will the boat offer short trips on the lakes for locals and visitors, but for persons with disabilities as it is wheelchair friendly.

Over the last 18 months Extrema Fishing put together a project that was presented, with the help of the local Mayor, to the Extremadura Government. The project contained relevant information so the Government could look into the possibility to provide a specially designed boat and/or platforms to allow suitable access for disabled persons to fish.

Although unsuitable for fishing, it is great that the government have provided this boat from the result of a project from a foreigner. We are sure that many people with limited mobility will enjoy a trip out on a boat as Marga did….

Our first half of this year’s season has come to an end; temperatures have already reached 40 deg and it’s too uncomfortable to fish in the heat. We will be taking it easy through July and August, getting back to the serious fishing in September when the temperature starts to drop.

Lee and Craig did manage to get in a couple of sessions on the Orellana before the heat really set in.
On their first session, over 72 hours, they found themselves fortunate with good weather conditions and banked over 1100lb of fish to average around the 30lb mark. Over the last few years Lee has landed many 40lb plus fish and had set his target for this year at a 60 lb´er. On the few occasions that Craig and Lee have actually managed to fish this year, the weather hasn’t been too kind to them.

However this time was different, a cracking westerly, overcast with the odd shower and the fish were on the feed. Almost straight away they were into fish and they kept on coming, enjoyable fishing with such strong powerful fish. Lee was in fits of laughter as most of Craig’s fish ran down the inside edge and around the corner. Craig had to clamber over rocks, wade through bushes and pass by a couple of trees to keep in contact with them; all Lee could see was this rod tip above the undergrowth.

Most of the fish were between 25 and 32lb so they altered their tactics by changing hook baits to try and pick out any bigger fish in the area. It paid off, more so for Lee than Craig. Lee was soon into a very powerful fish, unfortunately getting cleaned off on underwater snags as it screamed off on an unstoppable run. Meanwhile Craig got into a few slightly bigger fish around the 35lb mark; biggest of the session was just below 36lb.

Lees next run was another very powerful fish, it must have taken nearly 100 yds of line before he managed to make any headway. It seemed to take a life time for the big fella to get it anywhere near the net and when he did it still wouldn’t give up. Eventually, after nearly half an hour, the lump slid into the net. Lee sighed with relief as his arms were aching, but more was to come, he then had to lift the lump of muscle for the camera.

It was to be a new Orellana PB for Lee, weighing in at a hefty 59.5lb, half a pound short of his target for the year. Lets hope he can reach his target for the year, its gonna be difficult as we have a very busy second half of the year coming up and wont manage much time fishing ourselves.

The next session was to be a 2 day´er, weather conditions weren’t favorable and it was getting very hot. As it was to be their last they stuck at it, Lee banking a couple of doubles and Craig a couple of upper 30´s.

Back to the World Carp Classic qualifier España.

Both our pairs used their knowledge of the Orellana to take 2^nd and 4^th places.

Lee and Stu took second place. They drew the peg next to the flyer, giving the eventual winners a run for their money at times but really had no chance to compete with the good anglers on the almost guaranteed winning swim. Their peg was fairly featureless, however good angling and team work produced over 270lb of fish. Unfortunately Stu missed out on the first fish prize as he lost a couple of early fish to an underwater snag.

Craig and Chino drew a peg in a very slow section where few fish were caught. It was on a rocky point teaming with crayfish so Craig decided rather than fishing to something that resembled a feeding area at around 300 meters, he would stick it out close and try and pick off any patrolling fish. Chino thought otherwise and moved to the limits of the peg to something that resembled a feeding area.

The first night Craig presented his hookbaits over tight fairly heavy baited areas in various depths. The plan was to look for fish movement over the first 24 hours and adapt accordingly. As they drew one of the 4 pegs they really didn’t want, they decided to chill and watch for fish movement over a few beers. They certainly drowned their sorrows over a few beers and then a couple of whisky’s. Andy’s face was a picture the next morning when he paid a visit, the pile of beer bottles was enough for a party.

Now the fishing was to start. Overnight all Craig’s tigernut baits had been demolished by crayfish even though he had put around 3kg of particle on each rod. Over the course of the competition, following the pattern of the few patrolling fish, Craig moved his rods from inside the mouth of the bays mid morning to the main river for the day, then back into the bay in the evenings.

It was hard work fishing over 6 tight baited areas, if too much bait was introduced, the patrolling fish would move on, not enough and they crays would have everything. The counterbalanced baits approach using a variation of Enterprise Tackle floating plastics helped Craig picked up several fish over the course of the competition, all patrolling fish during the day. Unfortunately he lost a couple of fish, one a lump as it hugged the rocks on a powerful run and forced the hook to pull.

Chino in the meanwhile had a single run that produced a 8.9kg Common, it was to be his last as he had to leave a day early due to the loss of a close friend.

Our guides should prove their worth with good results in the competition and they certainly did. Lee and Stu banking 270lb of fish taking 2^nd place, meanwhile section C produced 170lb of fish, 90.86lb of these fish were landed by Craig alone, and 80.86lb to all the other 27 rods.

Once again well done to Peter Staggs and Andy McGregor for all their hard work, the competition went well. Good luck to Fran Granados and Jorge Sacristian, the overall winners, for the WCC final in France.

George, Chris and Paul had a great introductory to the Orellana, on an overnight session they had around 15 runs between them, all with new PB´s. George hadn’t been carp fishing for around 20 years, Chris a pleasure angler and the only thing Paul knew about fish was that he is from Grimsby.

The World Carp Classic España qualifier took place last weekend.

The competition was spread over 3 sections of the Orellana, all very different, the total weight of Carp caught was 725.75kg of fish over 5kg. A couple of good anglers drew the flyer peg and caught 40 fish with a total of 369.5kg.

Our 2 pairs both did well considering, one managing to take second place. They drew the peg next to the flyer, giving the eventual winners a run for their money at times but really had no chance to compete with the good anglers on the almost guaranteed winning swim.

Our other pair drew a very slow section where few fish were caught; they redeemed themselves with a lot of hard work and managed a respectable 4th place.

As ever it’s been a hectic couple of weeks and our few days off didn’t quite come off. We had 2 last groups turn up for short sessions, however we did manage to fish and had over 20 runs between us, nothing big, fish to upper 20´s.

Jay and Gareth turned up at the last minute, hoping on the off chance to get a short 12 hr session in. Rods and tackle were soon prepared for them, we even tried to sort out their choice of clothing, Bermuda shorts and football tops not quite the best dress for carp fishing. There was a good bit of banter going on over a few cold beers, they even managed to have a few runs. They took to the Orellana and will be back later on in the year, hopefully prepared a little bit better next time.

The next day novice German anglers Lorenzo and Sebastian arrived for a 24 hr session. One of their first questions was ´do you keep the fish´. – not the best of starts and it was soon explained (quite bluntly) that the fish go back. They managed to land 5 or 6 fish out of about 9 runs, both had new PB´s with most fish being 20 – 25lb.

Soon after was another group pleasure angling. Yet again a great bunch of lads. Ian, Kev Paul and Steve We´re gutted we didn’t get a photo of Steve’s two-tone forehead – look forward to seeing you next visit.

Next up was a group of 4 journalists and a camera man, another press trip from overseas with their first encounter of the Orellana. Some cracking anglers, one the record holder back home and a couple of WCC finalists, they will be back.

WORLD CARP CLASSIC SPAIN

Speaking of the WCC (World Carp Classic), Spain’s WCC qualifier takes place on The Orellana this weekend. Craig has been out helping Peter Staggs with choosing and marking out sections for the competition.

Extrema Fishing Spain has a team in; Craig is to fish the qualifier with Spanish friend Carlos (Chino). Lee from Catch Carp Spain is teaming up with another friend Stu, word has it that there’s a little bit of a competition going on there.

Craig’s comments on the matter ´ Lee and Stu – I am sure it will be down to the draw, just imagine drawing adjoining pegs, the pressure would be on then. jeje. You know how Chino likes his social fishing, we´re only taking the trailer for the beers!!!!!´

Well done to Peter and Andy for the hard work and effort gone into make the competition happen. Good luck to everyone taking part´.

Its been a hectic few weeks for us here in Extremadura, firstly the Irish lads came for some Carp fishing. It was a battle against the elements on Brava, everyone was struggling, not only with runs but getting to fishable pegs as the lake was overflowing. After a bit of risky driving we managed to get 5 of them onto a good section of Brava. The temperature had soared and the carp were starting to show signs of spawning, however the lads stuck at it. It payed off for Young Carl,16, his first ever Carp fishing session and he landed a 41lb Carp. Some of the other lads had a few runs, unfortunately losing a few fish; Gavin in the meanwhile beat his PB 3 times over the session.

That’s all the Carp fishing we have managed to do since, all other groups of anglers were to visit for either Barbel or Pleasure fishing.

Ken and John were the first of to arrive, considering they only fished from around 10AM til 6ish, they didn’t do too bad, well for takes that is!!! The biggest fish they were to land was only 9lb. They struggled with the strong Barbel, only managing to land around 1 fish in every 7 takes.

Bernard and his crew of pleasure anglers had a mixture of fortunes; a couple of hot humid days didn’t dampen their spirits. A good time was had by all, some Barbel and good Carp up to double figures, landed that is. These small carp fight like mad and are fun on light float tackle, Johns face was a picture on his first experience of this as the fish stripped line from his reel. The Barbel had started to spawn during the week; however they did start to feed normally, John and Phil bagged up on float tactics; they even needed to use extra nets. ´A cracking set of lads, especially for leaving some Guinness in the fridge, thanks Craig`

Next up was Andy and Chris, they enjoyed their chilled out week of pleasure fishing, so much so they told their guide to bugger off several times. They caught Barbel, some Crucians and Carp with nets to over 100lb and again lost many fish.

In the meanwhile The Orellana has been fishing its head off, friends have been bagging up with up to 12 runs a day with fish to around 50lb. Disabled Andy has had a new PB mid fourty lb fish.

We have only managed 8 days Carp fishing since November last year so we are hoping for a bit of the action this next week, our next pleasure anglers don’t arrive until next weekend, so we’re going to hit The Orellana.

Sticking at it and sticking in it

We eventually got onto the lake with Ken from UK. Morten and Daniel made the long journey from Denmark to fish for 4 days. With the bad weather and lake conditions they decided to ´stick it out´ on the Orellana, they knew fishing was going to be hard but wanted to give this impressive lake a go, they have heard so much about it.

Like most lakes here, the Orellana had risen considerably over the previous few weeks due to the heavy rains and most areas that we could get to were too coloured. The area we chose was not too cloudy and looked our best choice. Getting there, or rather getting back out, was another matter. On the way down to the stretch, Lee´s Landrover slid into a deep hole while crossing a stream, we soon had her out with the help of the Nissan and got down to the bank.

It continued to rain everyday, the weather conditions making the fishing even harder, however hopes were kept up as we saw several Carp top in the Bay. Kens only action was a missed dropback, poor bloke managed to go arse over tit when going for it. On Mortens and Daniels second night the rain fell and the lake rose, the Bivvys had to be moved back. The level came up around a meter in 6 hours, for a lake that’s 37km long and up to 2.5km wide with the dam gates open, thats an unbelievable amount of water!!

Ken left 2 days before the Danish lads; on leaving Craig took him up to the top of the track where Lee was waiting. The rains had worn away part of the hard ground and the Nissan slipped onto the soft waterlogged ground, leaving here laying on her belly and axles. Lee came to the rescue only to fall into the same trap. The next day we managed to find a farmer with a tractor and both vehicles were rescued.

Craig returned back down to the lake with the Danish lads. The lads were to leave the next day, a worry, but we had permission to use a private track that was in a bit better condition. When leaving the Nissan started to sink again, another part of the track was sodden. The trailer was taken off and pushed back down the hill, the Nissan then managed to reverse downhill to be hitched up with the trailer again. The Nissans new engine was tested as it was hammered up through the mud and we were away.

What a week!!!!! Needless to say the fishing was poor, but the lads stuck at it and never gave up.

´Las Jornadas Internacionales de Turismo de Embalses´

Extrema Fishing Spain were asked to give a presentation at ´The International Conference of tourism of reservoirs ´based around the project ‘Los Lagos' -´The Lakes´
´Los Lagos´ is a project to promote tourist resources in our local area of Extremadura and has a budget exceeding the 2 ' 5 million euro’s. Some of the objectives included in the project are: creation of new jetties or adapted fishing areas, provide a network of viewpoints and bird observatories and expansion of areas of accessibility for disabled persons.

Craig´s presentation was based on the fishing in the area and its related tourism.

The two day event was quite nerve-racking for the shy Craig, the presentation was given in Spanish in front of around 150 people, some being important Government Officials. Many questions followed along with interviews by Canal Extremadura TV and National Spanish TV

At last we have actually managed to get some time on the bank. Ralph, a tackle shop owner from Holland, decided to get away from the freezing weather back home and come for some winter fishing.
On a short session on The Orellana, he managed to bank a 25lb Common before moving to concentrate on Sierra Brava.

¨Beaten up on Brava¨
Fishing during daylight hours only, and considering the constant change in bad weather conditions, he didn’t do too bad having around 20 runs resulting in some 20´s and 2 x 30lb plus Mirrors. One fish he did loose was a very strong, during the battle Ralph managed to gain line only to be cleaned him off on a snag on the third powerful run.

Ralph was totally gutted, as we all know the loss of a good fish is always disappointing. He soon got over it after Lee and Craig had cracked up at the volley of English swearwords in a strong Dutch accent….. After all there’s no point beating yourself up even more.

We are pleased to announce that Extrema Fishing Spain and Catch Carp Spain have teamed up and are to work alongside each other. Not only do we feel the combined experience and knowledge of these already well established companies is a positive move for both parties, but more importantly, beneficial to our guests.

We now have more known productive areas to fish, 60 years fishing experience under our belts and 13 years in the Guided Fishing business.

Guests will be starting to arrive soon as we enter into a busy period, we will be getting some hours fishing in. Apart from Ralphs visit, it’s something we haven’t managed to do over the last month or so... We’ve been a bit busy organizing, attending some important meetings with government officials and running around the country looking for a replacement 4x4. Unfortunately the Nissan developed engine trouble, probably due to the thrashing it got a few weeks ago on our rallying excursion.

Well the weather men didn’t get it all wrong, it did rain heavily over the following week, but temperatures didn’t drop too much.

We decided that the Carping can be put off for a week and that we would have a look round at a couple of Barbel swims off the beaten track. We headed off on a 3 night excursion armed with a Nissan Patrol, Land Rover, shovel and a strong towrope just in case.

As we set off the rain had eased a little, but the thought at back of my mind was what was ´laying in wait´. I was thinking of the rain that had already fallen that will be working its way down the valleys to the lakes. Our first port of call was a section of the lake at the bottom of a steep hill through a farm; hopefully conditions were going to be ok to fish there, and not too much colour in the water.

As we passed through the farm, the builders renovating it suggested we did not go down the track due to the conditions. They were bewildered at my answer ´puede con un Nissan´ poor blokes didn’t have a clue what it meant. They soon got the gist, my cheesy grin said it all as I jumped in the car and headed down hill …………. What I did say was ´ You can with a Nissan´

The descent was very interesting; Lee managing a couple of sideward slides that Torvill and Dean would have been proud of, the scary thing was still to come! When we reached the lake, we decided we didn’t like the conditions and we were to head off to another location.

Turning round was our next task, we were on a narrow track cut out of the hillside with wet grass each side, the only thing below was a wire fence and a long drop to the lake. I was first to go, thinking that my new tyres would have a little more grip to help Lee out if needed. Nah, they didn’t even help me. As I tried to reverse backwards up the hill the backend wouldn’t go up, slipping all the time. After a couple of failed attempts, that was it, I had boot it to go for it. It was going to be either get that back end round and uphill or slide on the mud into the drink.

I was away, the 6 cylinders growling away, tyres spinning on the sloppy ground and the 1.5 ton vehicle going sideward towards a tree, not good, but it got there, the back end had managed to work up the bank. All that was needed now was to get the front end round without slipping over the edge. The task turned out to be fairly simple, the adrenaline rush was over as the vehicle was now facing the way back out.

It was now Lee´s turn, his face said it all as he clambered into the Land Rover , I´m sure he was wishing it was his car sat waiting for someone else’s to do the maneuver . Off he went, same approach as I had just done, the expression on his face changed, aggressive, it will go. Eventually, after a lot of sliding, the arse end went round and up and he hit the brakes, then the locked wheels started sliding, but how far would they slide? A couple of rocks were at hand ready to be thrown into the wheels path if needed as a last resort, but weren’t called for. That was it, he was turned around.

After a well deserved fag break we were off again, all we had now was to contend with a steep climb over gullies, streams of water and soaked grassy areas. We soon reached the farm, to be welcomed with a couple of smiling faces, the builders had heard us skating about across the fields and were impressed that we had made it.

We headed for another area to check out, dodging dozens of deer on the way. After negotiating our way through bulging streams and mud on our next ´camino´ (track) we came unstuck, the pressure of a streams debris had dragged a wire fence across the track and we had to turn back.

On arrival at the next lake, things didn’t seem too bad, the water was well up so the plan was have a couple of drinks, food, an early night and start fishing the next morning. Well that was the plan. After dragging out the Nissan from a soggy patch of ground, the vehicles were eventually parked up for the night. Sorted.

I placed some beers and a bottle of wine in the margin to cool whilst we had a chat and a laugh about the day’s events over a beer. After a while I went to the car get something only to be surprised by the water being up to the rear of the vehicle. The vehicles were quickly moved to higher ground, our plans to where we were going Bivvy up soon changed. Suddenly Lee remembered my beers in the margin, well what was the margin. My only stock of beer was now well under water, about 1 meter under to be exact. Out came the wellies and a long bank stick to no avail, they were lost.

Plans changed again, we were to travel to another lake in the morning, with the water rising so much in such a short time, it was sure to be coloured.

The morning soon came after the well deserved rest, it had been a long hard day driving. As I woke my first thoughts were whether we get any fishing in, no hassle Carp fishing on Sierra Brava also ran through my mind.

To our surprise the water had receded again, my small stash of wine and beer sat just above the water’s edge, were things were starting to look up for us?

We arrived at the next lake we were to try, access was not so bad and the water was not too coloured. We soon found out the Barbel weren’t feeding and we struggled. Lee managed one small Barbel of around 7lb.

The rain had stopped by the time we packed up; however the ground was very soggy. These soggy bits soon turned into deep mud pools with the weight of the vehicles on it, but the serious problem was again the risk of sliding down the bank with no chance of getting back up.

Our problem was a bend in the track that was like ice, as soon as we hit the patch the vehicles would slide onto the grass at the side and every time we hit it the mud got deeper.

I eventually got the Nissan up after using the limited 10 yard of fairly solid ground to get some speed up. Lee on the other hand had slid sideways onto the grass area and no matter what we didn’t work. Even using the rope to tow him up over the grass failed, the Nissan that was on flat ground couldn’t get any traction.

The last resort was to drive flat out over the scattered rocks protruding through the soil, the little grip from them might be enough to get up the 30 yds to the solid track. We hoped that the tyres would cope and that he wouldn’t suffer a blowout in the process. I was cringing as the engine roared, tyres spun and the vehicle bucked over the rough ground. The heavy vehicle was tossed about as it hit another rock, then another, but that’s what it needed, traction. It worked without suffering any injury, we made it, the only thoughts now were of a nice hot shower, a drink and the weekend at home….

Sierra Brava

This last week, after the adventure the week before, we decided that we would go to Sierra Brava for a bit of Carping, give the Barbel venues a sometime to settle down and dry out.

The lake had changed so much, the water level so high, we hadn’t seen it this high for around 3 years so we took a little time to look around for fishable swims.

We set up camp for our visit on the mouth of a bay, not too many trees in the area as I remember. We worked hard at first for the runs, the fish were in the area but wouldn’t get their heads down. One type of boilie, one of Lees preferred winter flavours, seemed to be working and we started to get runs.

It was an enjoyable session, much needed after the events of the week before. In total between us we had over 25 runs with fish into the 30´s, not to bad for a 72 hour session with the water rising at a rate.

The Rain in Spain

We have only managed to get down to the Orellana a couple of times over the last few days.

Firstly helping and giving advice to Andy with his new Microcat Baitboat. He decided to buy a boat with fish finder to help him get the best out of the limited pegs he can fish due to his disablement.

He ´s well chuffed with the boat as he soon banked this 42lb Orellana Common.

Our second trip put was equally eventful.
As he tried to leave the swim he found the rains had softened the ground and his van sunk into the mud. We soon got him out, but he was soon to sink again, and again, and again, our Nissan Patrol nearly copped for it too.

Eventually we managed to get him to the track and it was straight to the pub for a few well earned beers.

It’s not looking good to get any fishing in over the new week or so, there’s more rain to come and temperatures will be dropping dramatically.

Happy New Year

Extrema Fishing took advantage of a quiet period during December to travel to Scotland, England and the coast to visit friends and family.

It has been 3 years since our last visit; we were welcomed with freezing temperatures and fluffy white stuff everywhere.

One good thing was not being thrown out of the boozers before 11; it took us some time to get use to the NO Smoking ban in Pubs, What’s that about? - Apparently Spain is supposed to follow suit from Jan 1^st, we shall see.

Mean while in Spain, December been a very mild month and The Orellana has been fishing very well. Spanish friends that have fished have all done well with several fish over the 20kg (44lb) mark.

Well as the saying goes ´you got to be in it to win it´ never the less, we all had a great Xmas seeing friends that we haven´t seen for years and will soon be back on the bank fishing.

Extrema Fishing are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and are currently looking forward to the arrival of our additional fishing Guide Alan. Alan has fished both Sierra Brava and Orellana over the last year or so and will be joining the team to help us in providing the professional service that we have given over the last 10 years.

It’s been a bit busy week or so with guests on short breaks and a mix between Carp and Barbel fishing.

Lee, a very experienced angler on foreign waters who has banked several fish over 50lb with a current PB of 74lb, joined us for 4 nights.
Conditions were very hard for him on his first taste the Orellana, gale force winds for the first 3 days made life difficult. He battled on as the Orellana Carp got the better of him, out of the 7 or 8 runs he only managed to land 2 fish.

Things got worse as Craig set up next to him for a day and banked a couple of fish to over 30lb, to make things worse Alan fished the following day and also had a couple of runs resulting in this fish just below 30lb.

Here’s one of the fish he did land…… and what a smile to go with it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lee can’t wait to return to get his own back on these Orellana Carp; Craig is looking forward to fishing alongside him on his next visit.

Comizo Barbel Fishing

Barbel fishing was equally daunting for Dave on his 3 day visit, they didn’t get their heads down and he only had several takes, the best fish being this fish just scraping double figures. Alan landed a couple of Comizos and got cleaned off by a very good fish.

Overall a great time was had by all; the big fella Mick kept us all laughing with his imaginative sense of humor. I’m sure it won’t take long for “the French Man Dave” and the “Romanian guide” to get their true identities back.

Heres a couple of emails from recent guests, its things like this that makes all the hard work seem worthwhile.

Thanks again for a great trip. Fishing was a bit hard but at least I only blanked one day out of 3 which is no worse than I’d do at home probably. That’s the way it goes. I still had a brilliant time and really appreciate all the hard work you were putting in for us. I’d recommend you to anybody. Mick and Alan were absolutely brilliant as well. Top guys and very funny. We’d better credit Mick too for my Comizos as he was the one spotting my rod go off on 2 of them when I was over talking to him. He’s as good as a bite alarm and much more entertaining and a good baiter-upper. Every angler should have one.

During the course of the trip we had six upper 20's and four 30's, up to a PB 37lb scale perfect common. One fish, the one I lost, took 100 yards of line on a tight clutch and after an epic twenty minute battle the hook pulled. My guide Craig Reid, told me that it was a huge huge fish, one in a life time! Seeing that the record is over 79lbs my flight is booked for next year.
Will also be returning next year as Craig is a top class guide and will bend over backwards to put the customer first.

Thanks once again for the pictures and for teaching me so much new stuff, I appreciate it.

Orellana Carp Fishing

Last week was slightly easier, despite the light easterly winds, Carp fishing on the Orellana. Brendon was on his own for most of the week then being joined by Stu for the weekend.

Brendon, who has fished smaller 50 acre lakes in UK and France, adapted well to this huge lake. The fishing was quite slow with erratic feeding times and areas; we had to work at it to get runs however when we did most were good fish.

Heres a couple of fish landed, including a new PB Common.

Unfortunately as he describes it, he ‘lost Captain Sherman’ due to a hook pull as it tore off from the margin after a long battle.

Stu, who had an encounter with a large Orellana Carp on his first trip a few months ago, got the better of the fish this time; he converted all the runs. Here's a couple of his captures.

Extremadura Tourist Board Press Trip

We’ve have had a busy fortnight with a wide variation of guiding. We were employed by the Extremadura Tourist Board for a four day Press trip with guests from Holland and UK.

The trip was based on lure and Fly Fishing for Barbel and Black Bass on four different venues throughout the county that is larger than Holland. The group consisted of some top class anglers / writers from Holland and UK

Two days of heavy rain just before the guests arrived didn’t help matters; however in the tight schedule with only a few hours of fishing on each venue, we did ok. Bob and Robert stuck it out on the fly whilst the others fished the lure.

6.5lb plus Barbel taking dry fly

Bob was well chuffed with landing a Barbel around 7lb on the dry fly, the other guests banked Barbel to over 6lb, Zander and Black Bass on lure tactics.

The lads were a great bunch; they all loved the area and the fishing it offers. We are looking forward to seeing them again soon as they are already planning future trips..

Orellana Carping

After a week away visiting family Craig managed to get back onto the Orellana for a couple of short sessions. The first a social with Chino and Marie Jose, Chino works with his Dad and doesnt get a lot of free time to fish so he wanted to squeeze a few hours fishing in over the bank holiday weekend. They fished 2 days with Easterly winds but still managed a total of 13 runs between them. Only 2 fish were below 20lb and Chino banked a 14kg plus fish that he will be loading onto the TOKS competition to help him in securing the 1st position he holds.

Most of the other fish were mid to upper 20´s.

The second overnighter, Craig went alone, a much needed break away from organising another Tourist Board Trip for Tour Operators and writers from Dutch and Uk fishing magazines. Conditions were far from perfect with the easterly wind still blowing however he still had a couple of runs resulting in this fin perfect 14.5kg Common and.......

Craig managed to get a little time to do some pleasure fishing with Steve and Linda. They all got beaten up by the small carp on float tactics, even the small carp here are very strong.

We have only managed a few days Carp fishing in-between Pleasure angling and loads of office work. Fish around the 25lb mark are showing regularly with a couple of 30s to 36lb and up to 5 runs a night.

A couple of PB’s for Tony and Arthur on their first trip here, Craig managed to make some free time to advise them, next time they will have a better idea of how to tackle the Orellana.

Thanks to Specialist tackle for the great prize in the TOKS 4 online competition. The ATTs silent alarms have arrived and hopefully won’t be silent for long. Carpology Magazine are covering the event in the European section and a small article about Craig winning the TOKS4 Summer contest will be featured soon.

The online keepsack competition.

The online keepsack summer competition has just ended with Craig managing to get a result.

He managed to fish half a dozen short sessions, arriving on the bank to setup about 1 hour before sunset and packing up as soon as the sun rose due to the heat. The fishing was slow as expected, a total of 9 fish mostly around the 20lb mark.

A new TOKS competition starts on 1st September, registration is free and there are some great prizes to be won.

As usual, it’s been a hot summer with temperatures reaching the 40`s making it unbearable to be on the bank so there’s not much been to report.

We have been kept busy though, during the busy August Fiestas Craig was asked to help out behind the bar in the local hotel.

Having never been behind the bar before (well not that side) it was like a Spanish version of Fawlty Tours.

Overnight Social

Craig however, did manage to get in an overnight social with friend Carlos on the Orellana.
In total they had 4 runs, a lost fish each and Craig banking two Commons of 23lb 03 oz and this 35lb 14oz.

Disabled angler Andy is back to brave the heat.

Craig decided to join Andy for a short social session on Sierra Brava. The fishing was slow in the heat; in the 3 days Andy was there he had only managed 3 runs with fish to 15lb.
Craig suggested a move to another part of the lake due to the weather conditions. It was hitting upper 30´s for most of the day and the fairly strong breeze hadn’t changed direction in weeks.
After the move Craig soon realised that they would still struggle for runs, it wasn’t to be like the last visit with Kai a week or so earlier, there wasn’t much fish movement. Andy decided to use a variation of baits, pop up corn, tigers and a Quest Baits Fruity Trifle Boilie. Craig on the other hand stuck to his usual bait on all rods, A-Tract boilies. Over the 48 hours session Craig managed 9 runs and Andy 3.
As time crept by there was a little interest, Andy’s pop-up corn produced a 10lb common and he pulled out of a good fish on his Boilie rod. Craig had 4 runs from small fish and one from a lump that he pulled out of as he tried to keep it out of the sunken trees on the far bank.
As evening drew in on the first day, Andy had a couple of beeps shortly followed by a screaming run on his Boilie rod that was in open water. This familiar kind of take usually results in a bigger fish so Craig rushed over, it turned out to be a decent fish, new PB Common of 39lb 4oz.

SIERRA BRAVA

It’s been a while since we have fished Sierra Brava and our return was not a disappointment.

Kai opted for a bit of snag fishing on The Brava, as he was travelling alone this gave Craig the perfect opportunity to fish with him.
In 2 short daylight sessions totalling 44 hours they managed 40 runs and a PB for Kai.

Nothing huge was landed even though they were fishing an area with no trees within 100 meters; they still lost several lumps to snags.

Kai can’t wait to return now he has had a taste of this exciting fishing.

Over the years we have been here in Extremadura we have not illegally fished nights, only fishing the few occasions when we have had legal permission.
Catching Carp during the day on the Orellana is not easy, however our guests have enjoyed some great fishing with up to 22 runs in 1 day and we generally average around 6 runs a day. There are a lot of smaller fish around the 20lb mark showing this year and many 40lb plus fish coming out regularly, how long before the lumps start to show regularly. So roll on when night fishing arrives, it’s only going to get better.
Sierra Brava is an easier water to get runs and would expect most guests to land fish to mid 30’s, its stuffed with doubles and fish to 40lb. There are bigger fish lurking in this water, but with the many trees and sharp rocks below the waterline, a lot of tackle and fish are lost.

With legal night fishing just over the horizon, we have been out doing more research, basically putting into practice what we already know.
Craig fished the Orellana a little differently to how we normally fish during the day, over 4 nights in different pegs with no prebaiting, the result was 23 runs with fish to upper 30‘s.

So let’s see how things go, in-between pleasure fishing, social events and office work, we hope to get in a few more nights on the bank in the near future.

It was good to see the ‘Carp R Us’ anglers again (I think I’ve spelt it right)
After a couple of hard days fishing in temperatures reaching 35 degrees they managed to get some good nets of fish including crucians, Carp and the odd Barbel - they were preoccupied in spawning. The heavy socializing with the locals didn’t help a couple of the club members, (Bob n Chris) there not a pretty sight at the best of times. A nice bunch with some great personalities, we hope you all enjoyed your trip, it will be great to see you all later on in the year, hopefully Craig will get some time to get to fish with you.

Novice Carp angler John joined us for an insight into Carping.

Finding it difficult to get runs with the high temperatures for the first 3 days he decided to do a couple of nights. A good decision, he had 10 runs the first night and 6 the second resulting in a PB of 26lb.

Not a bad result for his first time Carp fishing for an angler that arrived not knowing what a hair rig was.

Disabled angler Andy just got back and didnt take long to get into fish.

Within 16 hours of arriving he has had 4 fish, one he thought was a real lump as it peeled off all the line on his fox big pit reels before he could turn it. Andy, and a local Spanish angler who was watching, were shocked when eventually the fish popped up near the net, it was only a 24lb common.

The 3 others landed weighed in at 24lb, 31lb and 31.5lb. Over the next 4 days Andy banked 11 fish between 18lb and 33lb.

Craig and Sarah's 36 hour social with a local fishing club

We were invited to join a local club to fish the Orellana on a 36 hour social with a local Spanish fishing club.

The club President, Chino a local predator angler that Craig has converted into a carp angler, organised the event to help the novice anglers in the club to fish for bigger carp than what they normally fish for in another lake.

We didnt get much time to prepare for the first nights fishing, arriving at the bank with less than 2 hours before dark. Craig opted to use A-Tract's boilies for the session, wading out over 40 meters and sticking out a couple of kg towards a bay in the trees.

Chino and the other members, many fishing beachcaster style on telescopic rods with bells for alarms, set up 100 meters to our left and baited heavily with maize. He was straight into fish, they mopped up his heavily baited area throughout the night. He had over a dozen fish to 24lb and eventually wound in his rods to get some shut eye. Like Craig he had been working hard all week and were tired when they started fishing.

Craig had 6 fish on the 1st night, working hard as he was fishing around 150 meters, wading out each time he had to cast.

Philipe, on his first ever carp session on the Orellana arrived Saturday lunch time, he cast his rods and was soon into a fish. He did well fighting the lump considering the tackle he was using, the big common had managed to tangle with another line, which obviously didnt help matters. Craig ran over to help, wading in with a net whilst trying hard to explain how work the drag as he prepared to land the fish. Unfortunately the fish was eventually lost within yards of the net, Craig was gutted for Philipe, he got a good look at the fish and estimated it to be around 50 - 60lb. That was it, the novice anglers quickly accepted the fact you need propper tackle and decided to share Chinos spare pod and rods.

Chino lost count of the runs he had, he also managed to loose a couple of lumps, they were just too powerful and managed to get into snags.

Craig caught steadily throughout the day and was tiring, that so that he didnt fish the second night, so much for the relax and chillout weekend.

During the 36 hour session, Craig managed 21 runs, six of these resulting in 30lb plus fish.

Sarah, who has only had a couple of short sessions on Sierra Brava, fished 1 rod for 3 or 4 hours and had a couple of runs. The first fish she landed was a small common of 8lb, the second, a hard fighting new PB common.

Craig had just landed a 29lb common as Sarahs rod screamed off, the fish was quickly placed in a sack and he rushed over to help her. Here he is giving instructions as she was hanging on as the fish makes yet another run for freedom. As we say, these fish fight all the way to the net.

We dont often get to nightfish, but this just shows what results can be achieved on a short session with no prebaiting, so roll on when night fishing becomes legal. We will keep you posted on the matter.

Keith Arthurs Barbel fishing trip on the Guadiana will be screened on Sky Tv Tight Lines on 24th April and 1st May.

John and Mick enjoyed some exciting Barbel Fishing having up to 70 Barbel and carp a session.

After a few weeks of Barbel fishing we finally got onto the Orellana for a bit of Carp fishing. The fishing proved difficult as the temperature plummeting 10 degrees and it rain almost everyday, the fish wouldn't get their heads down. Young Anthony's determination payed off and he landed this pb Common on his last day.

We had a difficult time trying to entice the Orellana carp to feed late March, however we managed to get 4 runs in the week, an 18lb to Craigs rods, 3 to Andy's resulting in a 15, 22 and new PB of 33lb.

A short trip to Sierra Brava early march saw irregular feeding patterns, especially over the bank holiday weekend. Anglers arrived in their droves, due to the noise the fish didnt feed until the Monday when Andy had 9 fish out upto the 19lb mark. Craig had 2 out of 3 runs in the 24 hours he fished, 18lb and a lovely 22lb Mirror. We will be moving onto the Orellana over the next few weeks, lets hope we catch the lumps in a feeding mood, time will tell.

A PB of 32lb 10 oz for Disabled Angler Andy dispite poor weather conditions and restricted access to swims. A 24hr session on Sierra Brava produced 4 runs for Andy, one resulted in a hookpull, the others commons at 12lb and 15 lb 8oz.

A short 3 hour session saw a 12lb and this 15lb banked.

Three days later Roger Coles landed this 19 lb 12 oz Barbel.

Sierra Brava Night Fishing Competition
After a hectic few months I managed to find a bit of free time to actually go fishing and entered a 2 night carp competition on Sierra Brava with fishing partner Chino, a local friend who is getting into Carp Fishing. Before we even drew our peg we both decided that if we had a bad peg ¨in the trees¨ we would move to another section of the lake, give up the night permissions and only fish the days. The top end of the Brava is like an underwater orchard; I will not lock up and run backwards to try and keep a fish from diving into the underwater branches.However on arrival at our peg, I was chuffed, the pegs were well selected and we had nothing in front of us, ok, less snags less fish, but I hate loosing fish in open water let alone in a snag with a hooklength in it.As Chino was working till 8ish, I had the job to bait up for us both, as baiting was only permitted for an hour from 11.30. I decided to do a heavily baited area to hold the fish in the mornings if they got their heads down, an area in our margin and a few balls of soaked maize pellet laced with crushed A-Tract boilies launched between the far margin trees around 110meters.I got funny looks from the other contestants as I proceeded to fire tangerine sized balls to the other side of the bay, then just shakes of the heads as the balls larger than oranges crashed about the marker float around 70 meters. After the permitted baiting hour was up, the waves settled and a deserved rest in the blazing sun, I baited the rods and casted. Two were placed on the edge of the baited area, and the third over to the far trees; one bait would be moved from the heavily baited area and positioned in our margin for the night when we retired to our beds. Sarah, my girlfriend and Marie Jose, Chinos, turned up around 4pm with the supplies and Chino not so long who after opted for potatoes and tigers on the hook. My choice, not that there was one, was a fish flavoured boilie from A-Tract Baits ….. a proven bait on Sierra Brava.
As always I was watching the water for signs of fish, I saw 3 small fish at the mouth of the bay some 200 meters away. So hoping for action during the night I relaxed and we all had our something to eat, a chat and a drink or two and settled in for the night. Throughout the evening we never saw another fish top, not a good sign as the fish generally show themselves.At roughly 2 am the middle rod screamed off, 1st run from the distance rod, fish landed and back to the sack for me and Chino. With in a blink of an eyelid, or so it seemed, off it went again, same rod same bait, another fish, small but a fish is a fish. I launch the rod out to the far trees again then the wait for the splash of water as the lead hit the water rather than branches. It did, splash, but I wasn’t happy. I didn’t feel I got the distance; three casts later I was happy, I got a splash and felt I had the distance too.Once again, the blink, the beeepppppp of another run on the same rod with the same bait.Saturday morning came bringing the usual fantastic sunrise with it, the only thing we were deprived of was the sound and ripples of crashing fish, nothing and then to hear from the marshals pegged next to us that there were no other runs during the night from the other 54 rods in our bay. A little later the girls woke and asked if we had any runs during the night, no the snoring scared all the fish away, was the reply.That was it, I knew it was going to be hard and decided that I was going to relax and enjoy the situation, 1 beer before breakfast, Paella for lunch and a good laugh with good friends.Just to top it off the wind got up, and yes it was blowing out of the bay, so we changed to helicopter rigs on the distance rods and placed the baits as the day before.
Chino and I grabbed a siesta whilst the girls did a bit of sunbathing as we were hoping for a busy night, within an hour my middle rod screamed off again. Another fish, a beautiful common slightly bigger than the others at 5.9kg.
After a lovely BBQ and a couple of drinks the evening quickly drew upon us, we rebaited the rods, once again one placed to the far trees, one on the baited area and lastly one in the near margin swim when we retired to bed. Chino opted to change a position of 1 rod to the far trees, a little tuition on casting and he was nearly there, however, like me if not 100 % happy recast, he asked me to cast for him and I did. Only another 10 yards or so, but hitting the mark.3 am and the first run of the night on Chinos rod close to the trees, an hour later another on yet again my middle rod on the same line.Once again the morning came along with news that only 2 small fish had been landed in the area of our bay, rods were recast and we settled into our relax mode. Believe it of not, as a guide, I don’t get much time to relax and enjoy fishing, so I made the most of it. The day passed quickly without the sound of a crashing fish or alarm screaming, but it was very enjoyable.
To summarise it up, it was hard going in our section, out of the 54 rods in our bay, 8 fish, 5 of them to our rods all on A-Tract baits.Overall out of the 43 pairs of anglers (258 rods) we managed 5th or 6th place, the thing was, we weren’t expecting to get anywhere and surprised when our names were called out at the presentation. I only placed the baits in a respectable fashion as any fair angler would…… A-Tract baits, as ever, the killer bait for Sierra Brava.

Pleasure and Specimen Carp, Barbel and Pike fishing on the River Guadiana, Extremadura Spain.

2006 WinterBarbel Season
Barbel fishing season Winter 2006 5 short sessions into the new winter Barbel season (30th November)produced 18 fish with almost a double figure Barbel every day. The day in question only produced fish to 9lb 12oz, in total 5 double figure fish were landed, with the biggest weighing in at only 13lb.

Carp Fishing

With no guests wanting to brave the winter weather here, notice all the jumpers, as per photos above the 5 Barbel sessions, we also managed to get in 8 carp sessions. As you see from the photos below, we had an arm wrenching time. These Carp are animals, most have never seen a hook and when they do, you know about it!!

This venue is where several top carp anglers have predicted a new European record will come from, already this year it has produced several fish around the 70lb mark. This is by NO means an 'easy water' but our guests have had up to 11 runs in ONE session and fish we are catching average around 25lb. The Orellana Carp provide great sport, not only for the serious Carp angler but pleasure Carp anglers alike, they fight like tigers and have almost certainly never been caught beforeand you know about it!!.
The Carp here are WILD, NATURAL and all MUSCLE, these Carp ARE Animals.

October 2006 produced many fish for the few guests we had during this period. Young James (15)travelled from UK to Visit his Father who treated him to 2 days guided fishing with us. He took several fish improving his PB of 10lb with a 17, 23, 27 and this 32lb.

Biggest fish of the month went to Dave Hart, banking this 41lb'er, the group of 3 took eight other 20lb+ fish in the total of 24 runs in the 5 days they fished.

A couple of comments from our clients

"Originally traveled to fish the Ebro, but decided that we would travel the odd 600miles to fish a new fishery. What a great decision! A completely untapped pristine coarse fishery, pristine environment and a real chance of a monster. Craig is just starting to get it sorted out (October 2005). I would bet that the new record common will come to one of Craig's rods over the next couple of years the potential is absolutely untouched. There are no foreign anglers here at the moment and the Spanish approach for Carp on these waters is still at the boiled spuds and rod bells stage. (they still catch). Its a really rich environment and the carp are heavily built naturally. Not as prolific as Canada or some of the stocked lakes I have fished on thecontinent but the fishing seems to be neatly divided into a decent number of large carp on one water and a huge quantity of general coarse fish on the other waters. It is a bite a chuck on one of the waters with Barbel taking deadbaits and half a dozen runs a day on the big fish lakes. I stress again this is a real natural fishery that is still maturing, if the environment that you fish in is important to you then you will not beat this area for its cleaness and must be one of the least spoilt environments in Europe. Chuck in the fact that dinner is 7 euros for 3 courses with wine and its also bloody reasonable. I shall return!!!!!!! Pete."

Had a excellent week with Craig and Kat although we went at the wrong time of year for the best fishing we still had a great time. He looked after us totally from sunrise to sunset. Just beware if he comes up with any "silly ideas" ( know what i mean Craig ...Boars and Oars) This area of Spain is totally untouched by tourism and the scenery unbelievable. What Craig don't know about fishing is not worth knowing and apart from being a excellent guide he is also bloody good company. I think Craig has got something in this area, the variety of fishing, the scenery, and the locals are all brilliant, and i wish him all the luck in the world. And as for Kat the only word i can think of to describe her is MAD and like Craig damn good company. I did not want to leave and come home i was almost forced on the plane home and i know one thing for sure i will be back as soon as possible. When i got home i was so relaxed my daughter thought i was drunk.I can not praise him enough if you are looking to fish in Spain and have a good time. Thanks for an excellent week Craig and Kat.
